When the Map Wizard gets stuck at "Initializing Google Maps" it's often due to invalid temporary internet files in Internet Explorer, general connectivity issues, or missing Windows updates.
Part I: Delete Temporary Internet files and adjust settings in Internet Explorer.
On your keyboard, press
Windows Key+R.Type
inetcpl.cpland click OK to open Internet Properties. In the General tab, click Delete… in the Browsing history section.
Uncheck the Preserve Favorites website data option, place a check next to Temporary Internet files, and click Delete.
Next, go to the Security tab, select Trusted Sites, and click Sites.
Verify that
https://*.google.comis present, un‑check Require server verification (https:) for all sites in this zone, and then click Close.Use the slider to change the Security level for Trusted Sites to Low, and then click OK.
Try downloading a location map again. If the map wizard continues to stall on "Initializing Google Maps" continue with Part II.
Part II: Reboot your computer, modem, and router.
The easiest way to reboot both the modem and router is to unplug the power cords from the back of each device, wait about 30 seconds, and then plug them back in. Once all of the lights on the front of the modem and router have stabilized, they're back up and running.
After the modem and router finish rebooting, restart your computer. Click here for instructions on restarting a computer.
Once the computer, modem, and router have rebooted, open your browser and go to www.google.com/maps. If a "page cannot be displayed" error appears, or if the map doesn't load, contact your local tech or Internet Service Provider (ISP). If www.google.com/maps displays correctly continue to the next step.
Part III: Check for Windows Updates
If you were able to connect to www.google.com/maps and the map loaded in Part III, the next step is to check for Windows Updates. Click here for instructions on checking for Windows Updates.
Try downloading a location map again. If the map wizard continues to stall on "Intializing Google Maps" continue with Part IV below.
Part IV: Reset Internet Explorer
If none of the above steps resolve your issue, the final option is to reset your web browser. Resetting your browser reverts all of the settings back to their defaults. Resetting your browser can reset personal preferences, remove bookmarks, and lose other information. If you're not sure what to do, or if you're uncomfortable with changing these settings, contact your local technician for assistance.
